Bringing Change to the Community

South Side Community Coalition History

Opening its door for the first time on October 11, 2003, the South Side Community Center was started by a group of citizens seeking to meet the needs of their neighbors. As the only community center in South Lansing, we offer a unique set of services and are known for our caring one on one service.

Since opening in October 2003. South Side Community Coalition has served hundreds of Southside youth, families and seniors.  We started a group of interested Southside residents who wanted to offer services and programs to Southsiders. In the beginning we set up a summer school program for high school students who needed help getting credits to graduate.

Then we decided that we wanted to have something for all residents thoughout the year. So, in October 2003 we opened our center.

Now we have programs and services that meet a variety of needs. They include: After School programs and tutoring; Senior Luncheons; Food commodity distribution; Nutrition and health care forums; Summer breakfast and lunch programs; Summer youth programs and a garden club.

Programs and Services

Our Mission

We provide educational programs, job training, health programs and recreational opportunities for youth, families, and seniors. We promote self-esteem and academic success, and foster the development of positive life skills through one-on-one mentoring, vocational advancement, education and recreation. At the center, Lansing residents can find information, enjoy fun, safe and interesting programs and have an opportunity to become involved in their neighborhoods.

And we have been selected as the site for the new Beacon Two soccer field.  This is currently under construction and should be ready before Christmas.

Here are some of our numbers for the past year:

 ·         150 teens participated in our teen Life Skills program.

·         More than 13,500 pounds of food were distributed to low income families.

·         We hosted a FREE Community Health Fair.

·         An average of 30 children attended our daily after school/tutoring program.

·         50 children participated in our summer camp and 4-H program.  And over 45 children participated in each of five special trips including ITEC week and a trip to Google headquarters in Ann Arbor.

·         We registered over 35 people with Medicaid or the Ingham Health Plan.

·         Our computer lab is open to the community. Those needing to complete homework assignments, conduct employment searches, and/or need to sign up for benefits under the Affordable Care Act have utilized this service.

·         45 seniors participated in our array of senior programs (Bingo, monthly luncheon, summer trip, and senior popcorn/movie night).

With all the excitement and activity, we are still operating under the same core grants that support our staff, overhead and core programs.  But we are in need of supplementing our basic grants with donations and foundation grants in order to provide the rich array of services that we have developed over the years.  And we need support to grow in the exciting new directions that these new opportunities provide.

Letter from the Board of SSCC

A Tribute for Pete Cunningham

Pete Cunningham, our director from the day we opened our doors back in 2004, is ending his employment with the Southside Community Coalition.

There are no words for us—the Board and staff and community—to express our love and appreciation for Pete.  But we can’t let this special time in our lives and Pete’s life go without at least trying.

Pete became involved with the Coalition back in 2002 when we had a summer program for high school students who were at risk of dropping out of school.  He worked with the staff at Hill High School—where the program was located—to make sure that the students had the encouragement and support necessary to stay in school.

After two years of the summer program, the Board decide to open a neighborhood center that would serve children, as well as teens, and families and seniors. Pete was selected as the director.  We have been here ever since.

Pete has played an important role in the development of the programming at the center since 2004—that’s 15 years.  He has been an advisor to the staff and a liaison between the staff and the Board as we have grown our Center and made the many decisions necessary to become a benefit to our community.

As Pete likes to say, “We’ve come a long way, baby.”  We are now at the center of the growth and development of our neighborhood, including the new City park with a soccer field, a playground and--soon to be installed—a walking trail.

Pete has helped support the staff in our growth and been courageous in taking new steps into the future.  He has been a kind and gentle representative of our Center to all those who come to us.  He has been a model of graciousness and caring and has helped lead our center to its present status.

In recognition of his role in creating and building our center, we are dedicating our computer lab and learning center in his honor.  It will forever be named the “Pete Cunningham Computer Lab and Learning Center.”  This way all who enter our center will never forget our first and only director who helped make the Southside Community Coalition what it is today.

We wish Pete good health and happiness as he enters this new phase of his life and let it be known that he will always be welcome at the center.
